Review of Great Falls, Montana

I grew up here. The lack of educational opportunities and adequate work opportunities made it extremely difficult to thrive. Upon leaving to the nearest metropolitan area, I was able to immediately procure full time employment, well above minimum wage, that came with basic things like health care and 401k plan. The rate of crime is 139% higher than the national average. Sex offenses are also higher than the national average. People in this small town want to avoid facing this reality. I’m not sure why. You can argue about crime rate all day but the numbers are the numbers. I suggest refreshing some math courses if per capita is a confusing concept. Public transportation is lacking. Bus routes aren’t viable. This leads to employment opportunity issues for many. Suicide rates have consistently remained in the top 5 for the past 30 years for the whole state, Including an increase in child suicides specifically in GF by 38%
There is much beautiful nature. That is the best part. So if you are a retired couple maybe this is a great spot. If you are moving here to raise your children, I would seriously reconsider. I’m well into my thirties now with a family of my own. I’m not speaking to this as some “bored” young adult with nothing to do. There was a serious lack of opportunities to progress forward. And by opportunities…I’m not saying “free stuff.” There is a lack of accessible public higher education, lack of viable working opportunities with living wages, lack of educational programs within their own public schools. According to NPR Great falls ranks 1 out of 100 on a scale of LGBTQ inclusivity/friendliness. Racism and bigotry I have seen waved as a point of pride in a way I have not experienced in small towns closer to metros or even other MT cities. The winters are harsh and employment can dry up during these times. This is a fiercely red city. I’m sure the type of replies to this post will only confirm that fact.
